It tells you how to help your cat, dog... and yourself to manage the different stages.

How should you prepare your pet before hospitalisation?

Your pet has been rushed to hospital. In this situation, you may not have time to prepare your cat or dog... The best thing to do is to try to stay calm and avoid stressing your pet. To reduce your panic, talk to the vet and the medical team. They will be able to explain the situation to you and no doubt reassure you. If hospitalisation is planned in advance, tell your pet what is going to happen.

What should you plan for when hospitalising your cat or dog?

Before taking your pet to hospital, prepare a small bag with a few toys or something he really likes. Soothe him by telling him that you're not abandoning him, that you'll come and get him quickly and that everything will be fine. If you take your cat or dog to the emergency room, with the agreement of the medical team, come back with one or more items that are important to them and, above all, don't leave them crying.

What precautions should you take when your pet returns home? On the way home, be relaxed and let your pet know that he or she is coming home. Certain fragile areas may need protecting. Your vet will provide you with the necessary protection or write you a prescription specifying the care and medication to be administered. Once he's home, don't rush him - let him get back to his feet.

Contact Canis Felis in Ganshoren, Jette and Brussels for advice on hospitalising your pet.
